Day 4

The heat of the sun is burning the bare grow, parched bikers strolling past it. Máriapócs, Nyíregyháza and Tokaj. The beautiful Great Hungarian Plain made us sweat. But yet again it was confirmed that the bike expedition is unstoppable; nothing could stop us, not even a 35 degrees heat (in the shadows), 70 kilometres, hesitating Hungarian police, railway gate nor the seemingly never ending road. We can blame it on the fortune or the miracle of Pócs but the essence is: after today’s long and tiring journey we arrived to Tokaj safe and sound. But let’s see where it all began:

After the consistent breakfast we enjoyed the hospitality of Máriapócs, visited the city’s pride and specialty, the Greek Catholic church, the national pilgrimage site, where even Pope John Paul II held a mass. The city has a monument dedicated to this event, where we took a group photo and after taking an exclusively cold shower, we left the city, passing Nyíregyháza. Crossing a big city always requires a logistically complex organizing, a lot of attention from the drivers and the bike riders, and a police escort. In Romania we had a positive experience asking the police for help, still here we faced some complications but as we mentioned before, nothing can stop us. The Hungarian police found it a bit difficult to keep the pace with us but at the end everything went ok, they were very helpful and professional. We’d like to thank the Hungarian police for that.

Without problems, we rode through Nyíregyháza and were headed to Tokaj. Wilson, the third group’s driver wanted to take with him the railway gate as a souvenir, he did succeed to get it down with the trailer but we had no choice but to leave it near the road. This also caused some organizational issues but it was solved really quickly, we almost didn’t notice ( Zsolt went to MÁV and they made a friendly agreement) and were already riding our bikes in the direction of Tokaj that was not so far away anymore, at first in reorganized groups but then back to the basic line-up. The sun was not as hot as before and we also got to ride in the shadows, even though we had some ramps to climb, it was still enjoyable to ride our bikes into the camping area, where we could chill for a bit on the Tisza’s shore. We made dinner and then rested. Tomorrow we’ll leave a country again, our next stop is Kassa, so we have to prepare our muscles and spiritual energy for this.
