After five days of waking up early
we could finally sleep in. No rooster, no camp noise, and not even alarm clocks
could disturb our sweet dreams. Unlike our usual breakfast, Paul awaited the
well-rested bikers with a special delicacy: guacamole baguette based upon a
secret recipe, and scrambled eggs. Despite it being a rest day we could not put
aside our bikes, so after a short discussion we entered Košice’s square. We
parked our bikes neatly and then everyone could go about freely, discovering
the historical city. Some went to Ady Endre’s dearest pastry shop, got some
coffee, bought souvenirs or just took advantage of the Sun coming out and went
for a walk.
After the free time the team
gathered again at the Dome, where we met our guide, Marika. The next station of
our sightseeing was the church and its crypt, the final resting place of
Francis II Rákóczi (Transylvanian prince) and his fellow exiles, as well as his
mother’s, Zrínyi Ilona. Leaving the church, we walked to the memorial house of
Márai Sándor, and then to the statue erected in his honour, where we took a
group photo. According to Marika, each Hungarian from Košice is thankful for
Márai for leaving them the history of the city’s civil life as a legacy, in his
work called ‘A kassai polgárok’. Our journey went on to the former
executioner’s house, then to the old jail, and we would have visited the
accurate reproduction of Rákóczi’s house (originally) in Rodostó, but the
punctuality of the expeditioners did not work out, because the Slovak cashier
closed up right under our noses. After this Marika showed us one of Europe’s
oldest breweries. Then like a good team, we bid goodbye to our kind guide.
Since the sunshine accompanied us,
everyone could enjoy for a little bit more the beauty of the city. Before going
back to our accommodation, we held another sponsored photo session, because
it’s thanks to them that now we can be here. Each year the expedition is
renewed, but we won’t let our traditions be forgotten, so today’s dinner is the
bike expedition’s famous French fries, for which the potatoes were peeled
exceptionally by our rookies. We’re already rushing for the second helping!
Tomorrow will be a long day. We’ll
return to the nomadic lifestyle and we’ll fight with the Slovak slopes. Our
next stop is Szepesváralja.
